The only thing that’s constant is change. Here’s what’s on our radar for state and federal regulation updates to help you stay compliant and proactive.

  • Effective July 1, 2025, Alaska, California, Illinois, Minnesota, Oregon, Maryland, Washington, and the District of Columbia all have minimum wage increases.
  • Effective July 1, 2025, Wyoming Bans Non-Compete Agreements. See SF 0107
  • Effective July 1, 2025, Colorado implements Employer Biometric Information Requirements (see HB 24-1130) & Clarifies Job Protection Rules for FAMLI Leave (see Regulation 18862
  • Effective July 2, 2025, NYC Earned Safe and Sick Time Act (ESSTA) amended to include paid prenatal leave (PPL) which applies to employers of all sizes. Employers must have a written policy, detailed recordkeeping and pay statement notices for PPL. See city FAQs and a Notice of Employee Rights.
  • New York employers must allow employees time off and protect them from retaliation for jury service. Judiciary Law has increased the juror compensation for the first time since 2003.   • Buzzwords in the Workplace: New Research From McLean & Company Warns HR Leaders Against Reactive Responses to Trending Terms – PR Newswire, By: McLean & Company, June 24, 2025.

A recent study by McLean & Company, a global HR and advisory firm, has indicated that the use of buzzwords, like ‘quiet quitting’, may indicate a deeper problem or unmet employee needs. 

  • Employers Should Regularly Check E-Verify For Authorization Status Changes, DHS WarnsHR Dive, By: Emily  Shumway, June 24, 2025.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that case alerts will no longer be sent, and employers will need to generate status change reports in E-Verify to re-confirm worker’s authorizations. If authorization has been revoked, employers must reverify with Form I-9, Supplement B.
